China starts construction of world's largest airport
The China Civil Airport Association has begun work on a new mega-airport in Daxing, Beijing.
The airport will have nine runways, of which eight will be used for civilian purposes and one will be set aside for military use.
The new mega-project, named Beijing Daxing International airport, is expected to handle around 370,000 passengers a day, and up to 200 million passengers a year.
Designed by British architect Norman Foster, the new facility will serve Beijing, Tianjin and parts of Hebei.
The new airport, which will open in 2015, will be connected to a new expressway and a high-speed train line that will transport travellers to the centre of the city within 30 minutes.
China plans to increase its total number of airports from 175 to 230 over the next five years
